Blackberry, Oh Blackberry. If only you knew ...Sorry, I couldn't resist that. But seriously speaking, in my country, blackberry phones (fondly called BB) has been the rave for two years now and its currently at its peak. Everyone wants to own one, . . .well almost everyone. There are still quite a few, like my humble self, that wouldn't care to own one, because personally, am yet to see a feature that the phone boasts of that is worth the price and can't be seen in any other phone out there.

A blackberry doesn't come cheap here in Nigeria by any standards. A blackberry Curve 8520 is 36,500 Naira while a blackberry Torch 9800 is 90,000 Naira. At such outrageous prices, one would expect that very few would go for such phones especially with the economic situation of the country, but instead, its the reverse. And the cellular networks down here are not helping matters either, they tend to advertise their blackberry packages a lot that a couple of the networks have removed the normal call tones and replaced it with an advert so when you make a call, instead of hearing a tone you will be listening to an advert until the person answers the phone.
The craze for blackberry seems to be increasing each day, owners are now looked upon as "big boys and girls" even when they cannot renew their blackberry subscriptions or buy a recharge voucher. Guys use it to impress the ladies and the ladies. . . well let me not go there. Now, the question I have is this, Do you really think spending between 30 - 90k on a personal phone is worth it, especially when most of the phone's features are not useful to you? From the little I know, blackberry is regarded as an enterprise/business phone and targeted at the people who need to access to their business tools on the go, but most people using blackberry around here are young guys and girls who think that the blackberry is meant just for pinging their friends, while other features that come along with the BIS (Blackberry Internet Service) subscription are disregarded not just because they don't need it, but also because a good majority of them don't even know its there in the first place (most don't even know the name of the company that produces blackberry).
A case in point can be seen with bankers (marketers especially). Their work entails that they move around a lot, but to access their emails, they need to go back to the office to do that. Now, except for a few savvy ones, the rest I've met so far don't know that they can connect their phones to the company Exchange/Mail server and access their emails on the go and when asked what they do with they phone after paying for the BIS, they always reply BBChat. I think if chat is the only feature you need in a phone, there are lots of apps out there that can do that without you having to subscribe to a service you under-utilize and whats more, they have a wider audience than bbchat that is restricted to only blackberry owners.
I could go on and on about this current trend but to what purpose? Those that crave the gadget wouldn't settle for less, no matter what. But before you part with all that money, I think it's wise that you take a look at other alternatives in the market that are cheaper eg Nokia E72 and you can also read reviews on sites that blog about mobile phones to get to know other people's take on the phone you are about to purchase, phonearena and gsmarena are good places to start..

i agree wt u.pple carrying a garget dat dey hardly use up to 30percent of its functions.
I'm the number one nokia fan...but afta spending between 4-5k a month on MTNs 100Mb packages I just vexed and went for a which gives me unlimited internet and at 3k a month(and thanks to Glo, is soon to reduce to lower). E-mailing is now sweet. I basically live on twitter and my FB notifications are something else. I'm typing this from my blackberry even sef. Apart from d annoying battery life and utterly useless cameras...bb's are the Ish if u want to kill boredom, reduce call costs, download large amounts of data n with tether available, pass this goodness to ur pc!
@naijaninja, I don't see how a blackberry would reduce your call costs in any way, and as for the unlimited data, I just went thru their website and saw their BIS packages. You failed to read the fine print. Tucked underneath the page and on the data bundle column is an asterisk and the words "fair usage applies" and they explained it better on the Blackberry Enterprise solution page. Basically, according to what's on the page, you have 1gb of data to use per month on your blackberry but, if by any chance you exhaust it (which they expect you shouldn't), they wouldn't cut you off before the due date rather, they will start charging you 15kobo per kb for any data you use after that.
